To Float Like a Young Child Would and other poems

To Float Like a Young Child Would

Tired of the kitchen heat; you pinch
Your nose and suck in a deep breath
Pull your legs together, tight near the knees
And step off from the edge of the counter
And into the dark sea
Below the kitchen floor. Look-there!
Beside you, schools of fish
Flutter by in a melding shimmer of colors:
Red, green, yellow, gold, metallic silver
And a hundred shades of blue. The fish wall waves

Rainbow bellies, like the quilt that hangs
From the clothesline outside your house, in the garden,
In the sea is a patch of coral reef
Like a rare coin sitting in the hull of a sunken ship.
You stop and paddle your feet, entranced by
Layer upon layer of elegance nearly
Blinding you, like those pictures of
Marilyn Monroe before she killed herself.

You Were So Quick To Learn Spanish

My dearest, dearest Deb…again…
The situation would appear as if, well,
It is now safe to say; listen, I know.
I know, ok? Jacob woke me this morning
At 4:32, he said, Zachary (and) buddy,
She’s not looking back. I heard. Surprise!
I heard your flight being called from the curb.
No delays-- I will be OK, truly.
Enjoy San José and send my regards to…
Guillermo, Miguel, or is his name Pedro?

If, and when, the Junk dries up

then I will run out
into the darkness
looking for you

that is…

if you could
make me alright baby
then I would

suck you-off
from the bottom
of a silver spoon

and into the belly of
a wide-body syringe
stabbing the needle-

point
deep
into my eye

pushing
the liquid flushes
through me

then I might
better breathe maybe
exist in this skin
